Bonding & Structures - Topic 2 Flashcards
What is an ion?
An atom or group of atoms that has lost or gained electrons to form a charge
What piece of information does the group number of an element tell you?
The number of (outer shell) electrons in an atom of that element
At what electron configuration are atoms most stable?
With a full shell of electrons
Which group of elements is completely unreactive because they already have a full outer shell?
The Noble Gases (Group 0)
How many outer shell electrons does a group 1 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Loses 1 electron
How many outer shell electrons does a group 6 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Gains 2 electrons
How many outer shell electrons does a group 3 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Loses 3 electrons
How many outer shell electrons does a group 7 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Gains 1 electron
How many outer shell electrons does a group 2 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Loses 2 electrons
How many outer shell electrons does a group 5 element gain or lose to have a full outer shell?
Gains 3 electrons
What charge is formed by an ion of a group 1 element?
+
What charge is formed by an ion of a group 6 element?

What is a lattice?
A giant 3D repeating pattern
What is an ionic compound?
A compound made of alternating positive and negative ions in a lattice
