Alkali Metals - Topic 1 Flashcards
Where are alkali metals found in the periodic table?
Group 1
What is formed when alkali metals react with water?
Alkaline metal hydroxide
What happens to reactivity as you move down group 1?
They become more reactive - it is easier to lose their outer electron.
Explain the trend in reactivity down group 1.
The metals become more reactive as it becomes easier to lose an electron, as the outer electron is further away from the nucleus, resulting in a weaker force of electrostatic attraction.
Give 5 properties of the alkali metals.
1) Highly reactive,
2) Low melting and boiling points,
3) Low density,
4) Shiny when cut,
5) Soft
Write a word equation for the reaction of sodium with water.
Sodium + Water —> Sodium hydroxide + Hydrogen
Give three observations for the reaction of sodium with water.
Effervescence/fizzes, floats on water, leaves a trail of white, melts into a sphere.
What is produced with alkali metals react with oxygen?
Metal oxides
Write a word equation for the reaction of lithium with oxygen.
Lithium + Oxygen —> Lithium oxide
Write a word equation for the reaction of sodium with chlorine.
Sodium + Chlorine —-> Sodium chloride
What colour are metal chlorides?
White solids
Do metal chlorides dissolve in water?
Yes, the form colourless solutions
