bonding & structure Flashcards
where does ionic bonding occur
between a metal and a non metal
how does ionic bonding occur
electrons are transferred from the metal to the non metal to form full outer shells
what does the transfer of electrons create
charged ions
what happens when oppositely charged ions are near
they attract through electrostatic forces and form a giant lattice
the charge of an ion is related to the strength of the ionic bond. what happens with ions with greater charge
they will have a greater attraction to other ions, resulting in greater forces of attraction
what is the trend with ionic radius and the attraction
the larger the ionic radius, the weaker the attraction cos the attractive forces have to act over a greater distance
what is the charge of a cation
positive
whats the charge of an anion
negative
how are cations and anions represented
using dot and cross diagrams in square brackets
where are covalent bonds found
they are found between two non metals
how does covalent bonds work
electrons are shared between the two outer shells in order to form a full outer shell multiple electron pairs can be shared to produce multiple covalent bonds
how are the shared pairs represented
dot and cross diagrams that overlap
what do the number of electrons within the overlap tell you
the nature of the covalent bond
2 electrons-1 from each atom means what
a single bond
4 electrons - 2 from each atom means what
a double bond
