bonding related to properties of materials Flashcards
1
Q
What are the diatomic elements?
A
Hydrogen, nitrogen, flourine, oxygen, iodine, chlorine, bromine.
(H2,N2)
2
Q
An atom or an ion is stable when…
A
It has a full outer shell(like noble gases)
3
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
When unpaired electrons are shared ,these elctrons hold the two atoms together through their attraction of the opposite nuclei.
4
Q
Types of covalent bonding
A
discrete molecular or giant network structures.
5
Q
Covalent molecular ….melting point? Boiling point?
A
- They have low melting points and boiling points because the attractions between molecules are easy to overcome
- Most do not dissolve in water but may dissolve in other solvents
- cant conduct electricity as theres no free charges that can move
- liquid or gas at room temp
6
Q
Covalent network…melting point?boiling point?
A
- have very high melting points because the network of strong covalent bonds must be broken.
- don’t conduct electricity (except graphite)
- solid at room temperature
- not soluble
7
Q
Ionic compound(lattice)…melting point?boiling point?
A
- high melting points because strong ionic bonds must be broken in order to break down the lattice
- conduct electricity when molten or dissolved as ions are free to move
- solid at room temperature
- soluble in water
8
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
- the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions.
