Q

What is covalent bonding?

A

When unpaired electrons are shared ,these elctrons hold the two atoms together through their attraction of the opposite nuclei.

Q

Covalent molecular ….melting point? Boiling point?

A
  • They have low melting points and boiling points because the attractions between molecules are easy to overcome
  • Most do not dissolve in water but may dissolve in other solvents
  • cant conduct electricity as theres no free charges that can move
  • liquid or gas at room temp

Q

Covalent network…melting point?boiling point?

A
  • have very high melting points because the network of strong covalent bonds must be broken.
  • don’t conduct electricity (except graphite)
  • solid at room temperature
  • not soluble

Q

Ionic compound(lattice)…melting point?boiling point?

A
  • high melting points because strong ionic bonds must be broken in order to break down the lattice
  • conduct electricity when molten or dissolved as ions are free to move
  • solid at room temperature
  • soluble in water
