Atomic structure Flashcards
What are atoms
- Every element is made up of small particles called atoms.
- when atoms of different,elements are different.
- Atoms of different elements are given a different number called the atomic number.
- The atoms of different elements differ in size and mass
Whats the charge and mass of protons
Charge=1+
Mass=1
Whats the charge and mass of neutrons
Charge=0
Mass=1
Whats the charge and mass of electrons
Charge=-1
Mass=0
What are isotopes?
Elements that have different mass numbers and the same atomic number.
What are ions?
Atoms which have gained or lost electrons
What does a negative charge on ions mean?
Ions that have gained electrons
What does a positive charge in ions mean?
Ions that have lost electrons
Number of neutrons?
Mass number-atomic number
Number of protons?
=atomic number
Number of electrons?
=number of protons=atomic number
How to know what isotope is more abundant?
The relative atomic mass is closer to the mass of the isotope that is most abundant
maximum number if electrons on each shell?
first shell - max 2
second shell - max 8
third shell - max 8
Elements in the same group…
Havd the same number of outer
electrons and have similar chemical properties.
