Bonding and IMF Flashcards
Molar mass
Mass in grams of one mole of that substance.
Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of
electrons.
Intramolecular bond
A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules.
Ionic bond
– Transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction.
Covalent bond
– Sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms.
Non-polar covalent bond (Pure covalent)
An equal sharing of electrons.
Polar covalent bond –
Unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming. This is the
result of a difference in electronegativity between the atoms.
Metallic bonding
The bond between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Intermolecular force
– A weak force of attraction between molecules, ions, or atoms of
noble gases.
Kinetic energy
The energy an object has as a result of the object’s motion.
Kinetic-Molecular theory
All matter consists of small particles which move continuously.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of which matter
consists.
