Bonding And Calculations- Unit 2 Flashcards
What describes an atom?
Atomic number and mass number.
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons
What is the mass number?
Total number of neutrons and protons.
True or false, compounds are chemically bonded.
True.
What happens to form a compound?
Atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined together.
What is an isotope?
Different atomic forms of the same element which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
True or false, isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass.
True if they had different atomic numbers, they would be different elements.
What happens in ionic bonding?
Atoms lose or gain electrons to form charged particles which are ions.
What do atoms with a shell of one electron want to do?
Get rid of it as they want to have the stable structure of a noble gas.
Which side of the periodic table only has 1 electron in outer shell?
Left.
What do atoms with 1 electron in outer shell do once they’ve got rid of it?
Join the first passing ion with a negative charge.
What do atoms with a nearly full shell want to do?
Grab electrons to become ions and latch on to the atom that gave up the electron.
Which groups have nearly full outer shells of electrons?
Group 6 and 7
What are ionic compounds held together by?
Strong forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
Which groups can form ionic compounds?
Group 1 and 7 and 2 and 6.
