Bonding Flashcards
Properties of ionic compounds
High melting point High boiling point Can't conduct electricity When melted they can conduct electricity Dissolve easily in water to conduct electricity
Why are covalent bonds strong?
The positive nuclei is attracted to the shared pair of electrons by electrostatic force
Why are ionic bonds strong?
The opposite charges attract each other with a strong electrostatic force
Properties of simple molecular structure
Atoms within the molecule have strong covalent bonds
Forces between the molecules very weak
Melting and boiling points low
Most are gases of liquid at room temperature
As they get bigger the mp and bp increase as the strength of the intermolecular forces increase
Don’t conduct as no charged particles, free electrons or ions
Properties of giant covalent structures
All atoms bonded together by strong covalent bonds
High mp and bp
Don’t conduct even when molten (apart from graphite)
