Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic Bonding
Electrostatic force of attraction between ions with opposte charges. Have a giant ionic lattice, regularly arranged
What is the positive ion formation
Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions (cations)
What is negative ion formation
Non metals atoms gain electrons to form negative ions (anions)
How does ionic charge affect strength of ionic bonds
The greater the charge in the ion, the stronger the ionic bond, therefore higher melting and boiling point
How does ionic radii effect strength of ionic bonds
Small ions can pack closer together than large ions, so ions with small ionic radii have stronger ionic bonds than ions with large ionic radii.
Ionic compounds with small, closely lacked ions have higher melting and boiling point than ionic conjoined made from larger ions
