Bonding Flashcards
What is an ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction between 2 oppositely charged ions
What is a covalent bond
The electrostatic attraction between the nuclei of 2 atoms that share a pair of electrons
What is a dative or co-ordinate bond
A covalent bond in which both bonding electrons originate from the same atom
What is a metallic bond
The electrostatic attraction between positively charged metal ions and the surrounding sea of delocalised electrons
What are the properties of ionic crystals
High melting points
Non conductors when solid
Conductors when molten
What are the properties of a metallic crystal
High melting points
Conduct when both solids and liquids
What are the properties of macromolecular crystals / giant covalent
High melting points
Non conductors of electricity when solid or molten
What are the properties of molecular crystals
Low melting points
Non conductors of electricity when molten or solid
What is the shape of a molecule determined by
The bonding and lone pairs of electrons, which repel each other and arrange themselves as far apart as possible
Which repulsion is greater than lone pair - bonding pair.
A) lone pair - lone pair
B) bonding pair - bonding pair
Lone pair - lone pair
What determines the bond angles in a molecule
The degree of repulsion of electron pairs
Are covalent bonds and ionic bonds equally strong?
Yes
What is electronegativity
An atoms ability to draw the electron density from a covalent bond towards itself
List the 3 types of intermolecular forces in strength order, from weakest to strongest
Van der Waals
Permanent dipole- dipole
Hydrogen bonding
