Bonding Flashcards
What kind of elements are involved in Ionic bonding?
A metal and a Non-Metal
What usually happens during ionic bonding?
The Non metal atoms tend to gain electrons to form negative ions
What kind of elements bond in covalent bonding?
Two non-metals
What happens during Covalent bonding?
Non metals usually gain electrons however, not both of the elements can gain electrons though. So the two elements share electrons so they both obtain a full outer shell
What are some properties of covenant compounds?
They generally have Low boiling points, they are generally soluble and they do not conduct electricity
What is a giant ionic lattice?
It is billions of ions arranged in a regular repeating pattern.
What are some of ionic compound’s properties?
They have very high melting points, the are soluble because water interferes with the ionic bonds, they only conduct electricity in solution because the ions are free to move.
Why do simple covalent substances have low boiling points?
They are made up of lots of different molecules held together by weak inter molecular which even under gentle heating the forces are broken
What is an example of a Giant covalent molecule?
A Diamond
What is a diamond?
A diamond is a form of our carbon. In a diamond each carbon atom forms 4 bonds with other carbon atoms
Why is graphite special?
Because it conducts electricity
Why does Graphite conduct electricity?
Because each carbon atom only forms 3 bonds instead of 4 like in diamonds. This means there is a de-localised electron.
What are some of metals properties?
high melting point, good thermal conductor, good electrical conductor and they are ‘soft; meaning the layers will slide
