bonding Flashcards
what is ionic bonding
an attraction between oppositely charged ions
why does an ionic bond have a high melting point
requires a large amount of energy to break the strong electrostatic forces of attractions.
why are ionic compounds soluble in water
water is a polar molecule which can attract ions out of the lattice
why can ionic compounds conduct electricty when molten or in solution
the ions are free to move and can carry the electrical current
what is a covelant bond
a shared pair of electrons
what is a dative coveland bond
sharing of a pair of electrons with both electrons coming from same atom
what is a bond enthalpy
the energy in KJ needed to break 1 mole of bonds. (endothermic)
why do double bonds have larger bond enthalpy values than single bonds
they hold atoms closer together, therefore are more difficult to break
