Bombs/weaponeering Flashcards
What are penetration bombs good/used for?
Penetrating layered targets. Depending on build of bomb, layers of steel, concrete and earth can be penetrated
Good Rule of Thumb for penetration of bombs with examples
GP bombs penetrate between 1’ (MK 82) and 3’(MK 84)
Penetration bombs penetrate between 6’ (Blu-109, 2000lb) and >22’ (Blu-113,5000lb)
5 HE weapons effects
Blast/schock-blow down walls, rupture eardrums
Fragmentation-spray with shrapnel (soft targets)
Cratering-dig holes, puncture structures
Armor penetration-puncture stew and concrete
Incendiary-burn things
*effects are present in all warheads to varying degrees based on purpose
General Purpose Bomb characteristics
Cast steel casing 50% explosive weight Aerodynamic body shape Jack of all trades weapon Nose AND tail fuzes
What is the CBU-97?
Cluster bomb unit that consists of a normal bomb body with 10 Blu-108B skeet delivery vehicles carrying 4 skeets per vehicle
Best armor on the move killer(tanks), contains smart bomblets with sensors
*cluster bombs are typically used for Area targets
Purpose of an IR missile
To exploit a targets IR energy
List four components of an IR system
Detector-senses target
Optics system-tracks target
Flight profile-Hit target
IRCCM-ignore flares
What is the purpose of a detector?
Convert modulated IR energy to an electrical signal, sense the target
*detector is important because the capability of the missile is limited by the detector
What is the purpose of the reticle in the detector?
For tracking corrections, the reticule modulates the IR energy for the detector via opaque and clear tracking windows and varies output of the electrical signal sent to the GCS based upon where the IR energy hits the reticle
How does an AM reticle work?
Measures the AMOUNT of IR energy passing through each individual transparent spoke of the reticle
How does and FM reticle work?
Measure how much TIME IR energy spends on each individual transparent spoke of the reticle
What are the 3 steps to IRCCM?
Detect- a sharp rise in IR energy or change in Kinematics
Confirm-check a sharp increase in intensity in another IR band
Counter-response
What are some responses and IRCCM missile might have in response to target protection?
FOV- small FOV allows for the missile to never see the flare
Memory-allows the missile to continue looking in the direction the aircraft was tracking, ignoring falling away flares
Spectral- can see in multiple wavelengths
Kinematics- biases forward moving seekers
Advantages and disadvantages of CBU’s
Advantages
- area targets, blanketing large targets with effects
- capability against moving targets
Disadvantages
- political constraints
- wind attack axis sensitive, all munitions now guided
What is the Concept Of Operations of a LGB?
Advantages and disadvantages
Target is designated with a laser, weapons detects reflected energy
Advantages: simple to use, stand-off provided for small arms and AAA, maintains man-in-the-loop to impact, accurate weapon with real-time hit assessment
Disadvantages: requires close in designator support, LOS for weapon and designator must be maintained, wx and battlefield obscurant may impede guidance
