Body Tissues Flashcards
Tissues
groups of cells that are similar in structure and perform common function
FOUR Types Of Tissues
CONNECTIVE TISSUE
MUSCLE TISSUE
EPITHELIAL TISSUE
NERVOUS TISSUE

EPITHELIAL TISSUE
*epithelial tissue= glands*
associated with body covering (skin) and body lining (of bladder or stomach)
HISTOLOGY
the study of tissues
FUNCTION OF EPITHELIAL TISSUE
- protect
- absorbtion
- filtration
- secretion
CLASSIFICATION OF EPITHELIUM
number of layers and the shape of the cells

number of layers in the epithelium tissue
there are 2 layers.
1st layer= simple ; used for absorption, filtration and secretion
2nd layer= stratified ; used for protection
shape of epithelium tissue
squamous - flattened
cuboidal - cube shaped
columnar - column like

mucosae
lines all body cavities that open to body surface and they are often adapted for absorption or secretion.
* 1st layer epithelial tissue*
- respiratory (nose and trachea)
- digestive
- urogenital (genital and urinary opening)
gland
consists of cells that make and transport a particular product/secretion
TWO TYPES OF GLANDULAR EPITHELIA
- endocrine glands
- exocrine glands
endocrine gland
internal secreting
ductless
hormones
exocrine gland
external secreting and internal secreting
ducted
produce non-hormone products
(sweat, oil, milk)
there is unicellular glands and multicellular gland
unicellular exocrine glands
*globlet cells- make proteins*
located in the epithelial linings of intestinal and respiratory tract
produces and secretes mucin which forms mucus
multicellular cellular exocine glands
two parts which are the epithelium and secretory cell
- epithelium-
- derived duct - secretory cells
- makes enzymes for specific glands
- release exocrine glands by mitosis (holocrine products go with it)
- merocine
- apocrine
merocine
product makes glands and some go with it

apocrine
pieces pinched off apical portion of cell

FUNCTION OF CONNECTIVE TISSUES
binds tissues together, offers support, acts as protective barrier, absorb water and its also a water reservior.
four types of tissues:
- connective tissue proper (tendents and ligaments)
- catilage (elestic cartilage)
- blood (RBC- only fluid tissue in body)
- bone
poor blood supply =
avascular
some variations of blood supply are well…
vascularized
two basic compontents of connective tissue
- living
- non living (extracellular matix)
extracellular matrix
- ground substance - are composed of water proteins and polysacharride
- fibers
