Body Systems Flashcards
What are the 4 body systems?
Digestive
Reproductive
Circulatory
Respiratory
Describe the route of blood around your body.
Blood from the body flows: to the superior and inferior vena cava, then to the right atrium through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle through the pulmonic valve to the pulmonary artery to the lungs The blood picks up oxygen in the lungs, and then flows from the lungs: to the pulmonary veins to the left atrium through the mitral valve to the left ventricle through the aortic valve to the aorta to the body
What are the special features of the digestive system?
Mouth Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine
What are the special features of the reproductive system?
Ovum
Sperm
Uterus
Placenta
What are the special features of the circulatory system?
Liquid, fluid like blood
Heart which pumps twice
Blood vessels
Organs like lungs, kidneys and intestines
What are the special features of the respiratory system?
Lungs
Trachea
Bronchi
Diaphragm
How does the foetus survive in the uterus?
The placenta is the source of nutrients and oxygen which also transfers waste products and carbon dioxide back to the mother from the fetus. It connects the umbilical cord to the baby (which does all the transferring from placenta to the fetus). Babies don’t need air as they have amniotic fluid in their lungs and get supplies of oxygen through the umbilical cord.
