Body Systems Flashcards
Cells
The individual units that compose the body.
Ex. Muscle, nerve, epithelial and bone.
Tissues
Similar cells grouped together.
Ex. Muscle cells = Muscle tissue
Organs
Collections of different tissues working together.
Ex. Stomach: specialised tissues (muscle, epthelial & nerve) that help the organ function.
Systems
Groups of organs working together
Ex. The digestive system includes the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach and intestine.
The Circulatory System
Transports blood throughout the body
Includes: heart, lungs, blood and blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries).
The Lymphatic System
Carries a clear fluid called lymph which contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) that fight against disease and an important role in immunity.
The Digestive System
Transports food into the body and breaks it down to enable it to enter the blood stream while transporting waste out of the body.
The Endocrine System
Sends chemical messengers - hormones - into the blood to act on other glands and organs.
Compose of glands.
Ex. Thyroid, adrenal & pituitary.
The Reproductive Systems
Produces cells (eggs & sperm) that join to form embryo - develops in the female’s uterus.
Testes & ovaries also produce hormones.
The Musculoskeletal Systems
Supports the body and allows it to move.
Includes: muscles, bones, joints and connective tissues such as cartilage.
The Nervous System
Carries electrical messages to and from the brain & spinal chord.
The Respiratory System
Controls breathing - a process where air enters and leaves the body.
Organs include: trachea (windpipe), bronchial tubes & lungs.
The Skin & Sense Organ System
Receives messages from the environment and sends them to the brain.
Includes: skin, eye, ears, nose.
The Urinary System
Produces urine and send it out of the body.
Includes: kidnies, ureters, bladder and urethra.
The Integumentary System
Serves as a protective barrier against external threats, regulates body temperature & helps with sensation.
Includes: hair, skin, nails
