Approx. by the rule of 9s
Entire head and arm is 9% (front is 4.5%)
Entire thorax, abdomen, leg is 18% (one side is 9%)
Perineum is 1%
Involvement, appearance and sensation of a superficial burn
Involves epidermis only
Appears similar to sunburns; localized, dry, blanching redness w no blisters
Painful
Involvement, appearance and sensation of a superficial partial-thickness burn
Involves epidermis & papillary dermis
Appears w blisters, blanches w pressure, swollen and warm
Painful to temp and air
Involvement, appearance and sensation of a deep partial-thickness burn
Epidermis & reticular dermis
Blisters (easily unroofed), doesn’t blanch w pressure
Painless, perception of pressure only
Involvement, appearance and sensation of full thickness burns
Epidermis and full-thickness dermis
White, waxy, dry, inelastic, leathery, does not blanch with pressure
Painless; perception of deep pressure only
