Body in Motion Flashcards
4 main functions of the Skeletal system
- Support
- Protection
- Movement
- Supply of red and white blood cells
Main types of bones
- long bone
- short bone
- flat bone
- irregular bone
- sesamoid bone
Types of Joints
- Fibrous ( unmoveable)
- Cartilaginous ( slightly move alr)
- Synovial (freely moveable)
Connective tissues
- Ligaments - bone to bone
- Tendon - muscle to bone
- Cartilage - smooth surface for gliding
- Synovial fluid - lubricant to keep moist and enable easy movement
anatomical positions
superior - toward head inferior - away from head Anterior - towards front of body Posterior - towards back of body Medial - towards midline of body lateral - away from midline proximal - towards body distal - away from body
Explain muscle purpose
Provide movement for the body and receive the ability to move through the nervous system
5 Muscle movements
Aduction abduction flexipn extension rotation
what are involuntary and voluntary muscles
involuntary: ones that do not move or contract, these work automatically. (stomach, bladder)
voluntary: skeletal muscles that are attached to bones and can be consciously activated to control movement
muscle relationships and example
agonist - prime mover that is causing the action (bicep)
antagonist - muscle that relaxes and lengthens allowing agonist to contract (tricep)
Stabiliser - acts as a joint to stabilise the muscle
muscle contractions
concentric : muscle shortens, causing movement
eccentric : muscle lengthens while under tension
isometric : no movement
isotonic : muscle fibres that produce tense or force as they lift the load through range of motion
