Encases, the brain
Cranial cavity
Runs within the bony vertical column, encloses the spinal cord. It is continuous with the cranial cavity.
Vertebral -spinal cavity
Foreign by the ribs, muscles of the chest, the breast bone and chest portion of the spine. Houses the heart and lungs. Separated from the abdominal pelvic cavity by the diaphragm.
Thoracic cavity
Surrounds the heart
Pericardial cavity
Surrounds each lung
Two pleural cavities
Cavity between the long that contains all thoracic organs, except the lungs themselves. (heart, esophagus, trachea, thymus, and several large blood vessels.)
Mediastinum
Extends from the diaphragm to the grind and is in circle by the abdominal wall and bones and muscles of the pelvis. The cavities, abdominal and pelvic, are not separated by a membrane or wall.
