Body cavities Flashcards
Open body cavities
Continuous with outside world
Open body cavity example
Lumen (internal space) of respiratory, digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts
Closed body cavities
Not continuous with outside world
Major closed body cavity (1)
Dorsal body cavity, cranial cavity (brain), and vertebral cavity (spinal cord)
Major closed body cavity (2)
Ventral body cavity, visceral organs, thoracic cavity (heart and lungs)
Major closed body cavity (3)
Abdominopelvic cavity (mainly organs of digestive, urinary, reproductive)
Major closed body cavity (4)
Serous cavities (slit like spaces within ventral body cavity)
Membrane
A thin, pliable layer that covers or separates
What is a membrane composed of?
Epithelium layer and connective tissue layer
What is the function of a membrane?
Protection, exchange, support to anchor organs in space, sliding as organs move, sensation, etc.
What do multicellular membranes do?
Line the body’s cavities and surfaces
What type of membrane and CT does a multicellular membrane have?
Basement membrane and areolar CT; they are vascular
Mucous membrane (mucosa)
Sometimes produces mucus into lining, lines the OPEN body cavities (ex: lumen of respiratory and digestive tracts)
Mucus, enzymes, etc. are produced by ______
Active secretion
Tissue layers of mucosa
Lumen –> epithelium/lamina propria (CT) –> muscle etc.
