Blue box Joints of the upper limb Flashcards
dislocation of the SC joint
mostly occur to people under the age of 25 because of fractures through epiphyseal plate
ankylosis
stiffening of fixation of SC joint
dislocation of AC joint is often called
“shoulder separation”
an elderly patient complains of pain in her shoulder and arm during abduction, but not during adduction. the pain largely occurs between 50-130 degrees of abduction, and you identify the region of the rotator cuffs as the source….what would your diagnosis be?
calcific supraspinatus tendinitis
degenerative tendonitis of the rotator cuffs results from
chronic injury to the supraspinatus (impingement at the coracoacromial joint etc)
most glenohumeral dislocations are
anterior (downward) dislocations
when do anterior dislocations of the GH joint occur?
during excessive extension and and lateral rotation of the humerus
what is often the cause of a posterior GH dislocation?
avulsion fracture of the greater tubercle of the humerus
what nerve would be damaged during an GH dislocation?
axillary nerve.
a person has a GH dislocation and you believe the axillary nerve has been damaged. what test would demonstrate this?
trying to raise the arm past 90 degrees, because the deltoid would be paralyzed
a baseball player complains of pain esepcially during the acceleration phase of throwing a ball, what might be the problem
a labrum tear
a patient complains they cannot abduct their arm past 45 degrees, and of pain at the AC joint: what is the diagnosis
adhesive fibrosis or frozen shoulder, scaring of a joint capsule that has been repeatedly inflamed. strain is placed on the AC joint because of compensation brought upon by loss of GH joint movement.
