BLS for Infants and Children Flashcards
What age is considered infant?
Less than 1 year of age (excluding the newly born)
What age is considered a child?
Age 1 year to puberty (with signes chest or underarm hair males and breast development in females
What are single-rescuer steps in pediatric cardiac arrest algorithm?
SAH BnB CPR AED
1. Safety of scene
2 Assess for responsiveness. Help! Call 911 or send someone, get AED, etc or send someone
3. Assess pt, breathing/pulse within 10 sec
If pulse definitely felt within 10 sec do what?
Rescue breathe
What rate rescue breathe child?
1 breath every 3-5 seconds or about 12-20 per minute (add compressions if pulse remains <60 with poor perfusion)
How often check pulse?
About every 2 minutes.
If no pulse begin CPR.
CPR at what rate?
30 compressions and 2 breaths cycles
Use AED as soon as it arrives (or go get it) and follow instructions
Second rescuer arrives, CPR at what rate for how long? Then what?
15:2 x2 minutes, then activate EMS, get AED if not done.
Where check pulse infant?
Brachial
Where check pulse child?
Carotid or femoral
Collapse is witnessed, do what next?
Call 911 or leave victime to get AED or send others if possible
What are 4 signs of poor perfusion?
TAPS Temp cool extremities Altered mental status Pulses weak Skin pale/blue
What is universal rate for compressions for all cardiac arrest victims?
100-120/min
What is compression-to-ventilation rate for single rescuers in adults, children and infants?
30:2. (Use 15:2 for 2 rescuers)
Why allow the chest to recoil
Allows blood to flow into the heart
What 2 techniquest can be used for compressions on infant?
2 finger technique
2 thumb-encircling hands technique
What is compression depth in adults vs children and infants
Adults and adolescents: at least 2 inches
Children: at least 1/3 AP diameter or
approx 2 inches
Infants: At least 1/3 AP diameter or about
1.5 inches
Why keep head in neutral position? (sniffing)
Overextending may block airway
Breaths more important in children/infants why?
Already low in oxygen when collapse as most are due to resp failure
Do you need to use a barrier with a child/infant?
Yes. Bag valve mask should ot cover eyes/chin. Be sure to cover mouth and nose
