AED for Adults and Children 8y and Older Flashcards
What is a PAD program?
Public-access defibrillation, means having trained rescuers and AEDs available in public places where large numbers of people gather, increased possibility of witnessed arrest. (airports, convention center, sports faciities, malls etc)
Why minimize time between last compression and shock delivery?
The shock is more likely to be effective, eliminating pulseless VT and VF
What is ROSC
Return of spontaneous circulation
What are the universal steps for operating an AED?
Power/Pads/Cables/Clear/CPR/Repeat
1. Open the case and power on the AED
2. Attach AED pads (adult pads for 8y and
older. Attach connecting cables to AED.
3. “Clear” the victim, all AED to analyze
4. If AED advises shock, it will tell you to
clear the victim
5. If no shock needed or after any shock
delivery, immediately resume CPR,
starting with chest compressions
6. After 5 cycles or 2” CPR, AED will
prompt repeat of steps 3 and 4
Should you use child pads on an adult?
No, better to continue CPR as shock dose too small for adult
What to do if pt has hairy chest?
Shave
What if pt immersed in water or has water covering the chest?
Pull him out of the water, quickly wipe the chest before attaching AED pads, if he’s lying on snow or in a small puddle, you may use the AED after quickly wiping the chest
What is pt has implanted defibrillator?
Don’t place AED pad directly over implanted device.
What if pt has transdermal med patches?
Don’t put AED pad directly on top of a med patch, could burn the skin or block transfer of energy. If time allows, remove the patch and wipe the area before placing pad, using protective gloves.
