BLS Flashcards
What is the order of steps for BLS
CAB (compression, airway, breathing)
What are the 2 focuses of BLS
High quality of CPR & Early defibrilation
What should the rate of compressions be
At least 100/min
What should the depth of compression be for adults, children, and infants
Adult = 2" Child = 1/2 AP depth (2") Infant = 1/3 AP depth (1.5")
What must you allow with each compression
Full chest recoil
What is the ratio of compressions to breaths
30:2
It is important to minimize compression interruptions to less than…
10 seconds
With rescue breaths it is important not to….
Over ventilate
How long should each breath be
1 second
What must you look for with each breath
Rise and fall of the chest
What do you do if you don’t see chest rise after 1 breath? After 2 breaths?
After 1 breath = adjust mask and give 2nd breath
After 2 breaths = continue compressions
How long should a cycle last
2 minutes
What should each cycle include
5 rounds of 30 compressions with 2 breaths
What should be done at the end of the 2 minute cycle
Have the AED analyze the patient and switch compressors
What is the goal CAP? What may be the problem if it isn’t at that level
Greater than 10mm Hg. If not at that level problem may be poor CPR technique (esp chest compressions)
When should you use the AED
ASAP
What is the 1st thing to do when the AED arrives
Turn it on
What do you do after turning the AED on
Put the pads on the patient
What do you do if the patient has an implanted defibrillator
Do not put the pad over it put it at least 1” away
What if the patient has a nitro patch on or is wet/sweaty
Wide the chest clean/dry and do not put patch directly where patch was
What do you do after pads are on the patient
Plug the pads in and have the AED analyze
What do you do if the AED doesn’t analyze right away or properly
Continue with CPR compressions
What is the advantage to manual defib over AED
It minimizes the interruptions in chest compressions
What is the advantage of defib pads over paddles
They give a more direct and rapid shock
What do you do after the shock is delviered
Immediately continue with chest compressions; do NOT stop to check the pulse/rhythm
When do you check the rhythm
After the 2 minute cycle of CPR
When do you check the pulse
Only once an organized rhythm is present
What is the optimal time to deliver the shock
Within 3-5 minutes
What strength of shock is delivered for monophasic defib
200-360 Joules
What strength of shock is delivered for biphasic defib
120-200 Joules
What strength of shock should be delivered if you are unsure if it is monophasic or biphasic
200 Joules
