Blood vessels of head and neck Flashcards
What are the three main blood vessels that supply the head?
Internal carotid arteries x2 (brain and eyes)
External carotid arteries x 2 (extracranial structures)
Vertebral arteries x2 (brain)
What do the subclavian arteries terminate into?
they become continuous with the axillary arteries
At what point do the subclavian arteries terminate?
terminate at the external margin of the 1st rib (then are continuous with axillary arteries)
What are the major collateral branches of the subclavian arteries?
vertebral
internal thoracic
What are the four parts of the vertebral artery?
cervical part - arisal off subclavian to C1
vertebral part - C1 to C6
suboccipital part - ascends between the atlas and framen magnum
intracranial part - from foramen magnum into the cranial cavity
Describe the course of the vertebral artery
each courses through the transverse foramen of C6 to C1 vertebrae
What is the origin of the vertebral arteries?
arise from the first part of the subclavian artery
When does the vertebral artery terminate?
vertebral arteries unite within the cranial cavity to form the basilar artery
Where do the common carotid arteries arise?
R- from brachiocephalic artery
L- from aortic arch
Describe the course of the common carotid arteries
each ascends posterolateral to the trachea and larynx
At what vertebral level does the common carotid artery bifurcate?
bifurcates at C3/4 intervertebral disc into the internal and external carotid arteries
at superior border of thyroid cartilage (C3/C4)
What are the collateral branches of the common carotid arteries?
there are no collateral branches
What is the difference in location and diameter of the internal and external carotid arteries?
internal- wider diameter and is posterolateral to the external
What is the carotid sinus?
dilation of the most proximal part of the internal carotid artery
contains baroreceptors in its walls (for pressure detection)
What are the collateral branches of the external carotid arteries and what do they supply?
collateral- numerous branches that supply thyroid gland and all parts of the head except the brain and eyes
What are the terminal branches of the external carotid arteries and what do they supply?
terminal- middle meningeal artery is a collateral branch of maxillary artery
From which arteries does the middle meningeal artery branch off?
it is a collateral branch of the maxillary artery, of the external carotid artery
What do the middle meningeal arteries supply?
cranial bones and dura
Where does the middle meningeal artery enter the cranial cavity?
through the foramen spinosum
At what point does the middle meningeal artery divide into anterior and posterior branches?
at pterion
What are the four parts of the internal carotid artery?
cervical part
petrous part
cavernous part
cerebral part
Which parts of the internal carotid artery are inside the cranium?
petrous part (carotid canal of petrous part of temporal bone) cavernous part (carotid groove of the body of the sphenoid bone) cerebral part (inferior surface of the brain)
What is the carotid siphon?
U-shaped portion of the internal carotid artery
Formed partially by cavernous part and partially by cerebral part
opthalmic artery is a branch of the carotid siphon
What artery does the opthalmic artery branch off?
carotid siphon region of the internal carotid artery
