Blood Vessels Of Head Flashcards
What are the parts of the internal carotid arteries?
Cervical petrous cavernous cerebral
Where is the cervical part located and where does it begin and end
Located in superior region of neck at c3/4 and terminates common carotid artery
Where is the petrous part located?
Central canal of the petrous portion of the temporal bone
Where does the cavernous part course?
Passes lateral to the sella turcica of sphenoid bone along carotid groove and through the cavernous sinus
What does the cerebral part of the internal carotid artery divide into?
Anterior cerebral middle cerebral and posterior communicating arteries
What is the carotid siphon?
U shapes part of internal carotid artery that is formed by portions of the cavernous and cerebral parts the opthalamic artery is an anterior branch of this artery
What does the cerebral arterial circle form an anastomosis around?
Optic chiasm and infundibulum of pituitary gland
What is the cerebral arterial circle formed by?
Posterior cerebral, posterior communicating, internal carotid, anterior cerebral and anterior communicating
What is the largest terminal branch of the internal carotid?
Middle cerebral artery paired
What is the smallest terminal branch of the internal carotid artery?
Anterior cerebral artery
What courses between the left and right anterior cerebral arteries?
Anterior communicating arteries
What supply’s 1/3 of the posterior brain and courses across the ventral surface of the brainstem and unite to form the basilar artery?
Vertebral arteries
Where does the basilar artery course?
Along the ventral surface of the pond divides into the left and right posterior cerebral arteries
What forms an anatomoses with the posterior cerebral artery?
Posterior communicating artery
What drains the inner and outer dura layers into the confluence of sinuses?
Superior sagittal sinus
Where do the cerebral veins drain into?
Superior sagittal sinus
Where does the occipital sinus lie and what does it drain into?
Lies posterior to the cerebellum and drains into the confluence of sinuses
Where does the inferior sagittal sinus lie and what does it drain into?
Lies in the inferior free border of the falx cerebri and drains into the straight sinus
What is formed by the Union of the great cerebral vein with the inferior sagittal sinus?
Straight sinus and drains into confluence of sinus runs along the line of attachment of the falx cerebri tentorium cerebelli
What is the confluence of sinuses?
Where the superior inferior and occipital sinus terminate and where the transverse sinus begins
Where is the transverse sinus enclosed in?
Posterior margin of tentorium cerebelli
What is the sigmoid sinus?
Continuation of transverse sinus and drains into the internal jugular vein
What sinus is located on either side of the sella turcica and drains into the pertrosal sinuses?
Cavernous sinus
Where does the inferior and superior pertrosal drain into?
Proximal end of sigmoid or distal end of transverse anterior horns
Distal or terminal end of sigmoid sinus
Branches of brachiocephalic artery?
Right subclavian and right common carotid
Features of subclavian?
Located in root of neck supply head upper limbs and thoracic and abdominal walls
Origin of right subclavian artery?
Terminal branch of brachiocephalic artery courses posterior to the right of the sternoclavicular joint
Origin of left subclavian?
Posterior branch of aortic arch
Course of subclavian arteries?
Course superiority and lateral from origin crosses the outer border of first rib becomes axillary artery
Major branches of subclavian?
Vertebral and internal thoracic arteries
What veins are continuous with the axillary vein?
Subclavian veins
What are the four parts of the vertebral arteries?
Cervical vertebral suboccipital and intracranial
Origin of vertebral arteries?
Subclavian artery first part
Course of vertebral artery?
Courses through foramen a transversaria of C6 to C1 vertebrae referred to vertebral part as it ascends between the atlas and foramen magnum it’s called the suboccipital part after passing through the foramen magnum it’s called the intracranial part
Terminal end of vertebral arteries?
Basilar artery
What is a vertebral vein?
Vertebral veins form a plexus of small veins that surround the vertebral part of the vertebral artery within the foramen a transversaria of the cervical vertebrae
What are the three carotid arteries?
External common and internal all located in carotid sheath
Origin of right common carotid artery?
Terminal branch of brachiocephalic artery
Origin of left common carotid artery?
Posterior branch of aortic arch
Course of carotid arteries?
Posterolateral to trachea and larynx and bifurcated at the level of the laminae of thyroid cartilage at C3/4 divides into external and internal carotid arteries
What branches are off the external carotid artery?
Middle meningeal arteries and maxillary branch
What is the location of the internal jugular vein?
Posterolateral to common carotid artery and internal carotid artery lies within carotid sheath
What is the origin of the internal jugular vein?
Jugular foramen and is the continuation of the sigmoid sinus
Course of internal jugular vein?
Descends with carotid sheath to root of the neck and unites with the subclavian vein to form brachiocephalic vein
What does the external jugular vein drain?
Superficial structures of the head
Course of the external jugular vein?
Course through superficial fascia begins near sternocleidomastoid muscle posterior to the angle of the mandible descends across the sternocleidomastoid muscle and enters the posterior triangle of the neck
