Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the different types of blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Arterioles
- Capillaries
What do the arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart and into arterioles
What are arterioles?
Smaller arteries that control blood from arteries to capillaries
What are capillaries?
Tiny vessels that link arterioles to veins
What do veins do?
Carry blood from capillaries back to the heart
What are the various layers to blood vessels?
- Tough Fibrous Outer Layer
- Muscle Layer
- Elastic Layer
- Thin inner lining ( endothelium )
- Lumen
What is the purpose of the tough fibrous outer layer?
Resists pressure changes from both within and outside
What is the purpose of the muscle layer?
Contract and so control the flow of blood
What is the purpose of the elastic layer?
Helps maintain blood pressure by stretching and springing back ( recoiling )
What is the purpose of the endothelium?
Smooth to reduce friction and thin to allow diffusion
What is the purpose of the lumen?
Central cavity of the blood vessel through which the blood flows
What differs between each blood vessel?
The relative proportions of each layer
How do arterioles differ to arteries?
- Smaller in diameter
* Having a relatively larger muscle layer and lumen
What are the differences in structure related to?
Differences in the function that each type of vessel performs
What is the purpose of the arteries?
To transport blood rapidly under high pressure from he heart to the tissues
