Blood Vessels Flashcards
What type of circulatory system do humans have
Closed Circulatory system
Name the five main types of blood vessels
Arteries Arterioles Capillaries Venules Veins
What is the flow chart of blood through the vessels
Heart -> Artery -> Arteriole -> Capillary -> Venule -> Vein -> Heart
What do Arteries do
Carry blood AWAY from the heart to other organs
What level of pressure is the blood in arteries
High pressure
How do arteries manage high blood pressure
The walls of the arteries are very thick and elastic
What is the main artery
The aorta
What are arterioles
The smallest arteries in the body
What do arterioles do
They deliver blood to capillaries
How do arterioles control how much blood enters the capillaries
The are capable of constricting or dilating
What are capillaries
Very thin tubes that join the arteries with the veins
How thick of capillaries
Only 1 cell thick
Why are capillaries important
This is where gaseous exchange occurs
What gaseous exchange occurs in the capillaries
Oxygen and nutrients diffuse out of the capillaries into the tissue cells
What are Venules
Group of capillaries within a tissue that reunite to form a small vein called a venule
What do Venules do
Collect blood from capillaries and drain it into veins
What do Veins do
Carry blood which contains a large amount of carbon dioxide (deoxygenated) back to your heart
Do Veins have thinner or thicker walls than arteries and why is this
They have thinner walls than arteries as the blood is not moving at such a high pressure
Why do veins have valves
Due to the low pressure, veins have valves to stop the blood from flowing away from the heart
What are the principal veins
The venae cavae
What are arteries layer of muscles and elastic fibers described as
They have a thick layer of muscles and elastic fibers
What are veins layer of muscles and elastic fibers described as
They have a thin layer of muscles and elastic fibers
Do capillaries have muscles and elastic fibers
No
Describe Arteries lumen
Narrow
