Blood System Flashcards
What is a heart and what is it’s function
Organ with a muscular tissue wall
Pumps blood blood d around the body
What are the four main chambers of the heart
Left and right atria
Left and right ventricles
List the process of the travel of red blood cells and the circulatory system
Lungs- alveoli- pulmonary vein- left atrium- valves- left ventricle- valves- aorta- arteries- body tissue- vein- vena cava- right atrium- valves- right ventricles- valves- pulmonary artery- lungs
What does the atria do
Force blood into ventricles
What do ventricles do
Force blood out the heart
What do valves do
Ensure blood flows in correct direction
What are the properties of arteries compared to veins
Thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres
Veins however have thinner walls and often have valves to prevent back flow of blood
What happens if the arteries are too narrow
It restricts blood flow thus stents are used to open them
What are the properties of capillaries in organs
Narrow thin walled blood vessels
What do capillaries do
Substances passing into the body cells by leaving the blood- as well as substances produced by cells go into the blood, go through the capillary walls
