Blood supply to the Head/Neck Flashcards
Where does the R common carotid artery arise from?
Brachiocephalic Trunk
Where does the L common carotid artery arise from?
Aortic Arch
Where do the common carotid arteries divide and into what?
- at the level of the superior border of the thyroid cartilage
- into internal and external carotid arteries
What does the external carotid artery supply?
- most of the external cranium
The Internal carotid arteries are a direct continuation of which arteries?
Common carotid arteries
Where do the internal carotid arteries enter the cranium?
through the carotid canals in the petrous part of the temporal bones
Which arteries are the main arteries of the brain and structures in the orbit?
Internal carotid arteries
Pathway of the Vertebral arteries
- first branch of the subclavian arteries
- begin in the root of the neck
- ascend through the transverse foramina of the first six cervical vertebrae
- enter cranium through foramen magnum
What do the vertebral arteries supply?
along with internal carotid artery it supplies the brain
Pathway of the External Jugular vein
- begins near the angle of mandible
- crosses over the SCM muscles obliquely, deep to platysma
- terminates in subclavian vein
Which part does the external jugular vein drain?
most of the scalp and side of the face (structures supplied by the external carotid artery)
Pathway of the internal jugular vein
- exits the skull by the jugular foramen
- descend in the neck along with the internal carotid arteries
- joins with the subclavian veins to form the brachiocephalic vein on each side
What forms the Superior vena cava (SVC)
- brachiocephalic veins
What do the internal jugular veins drain?
largest of veins, drains head and neck
drain most of the blood from brain
What do the vertebral veins drain?
cervical vertebra, spinal cord, some cervical muscles
