Blood Pressure Measurement :) Flashcards
what is the higher value in blood pressure measurements?
systolic blood pressure
what is the systolic blood pressure?
the force the blood exerts on the walls of the artery during systole
what is the lower value for blood pressure?
diastolic blood pressure
what is the diastolic blood pressure?
the force the blood exerts on the walls of the artery during diastole
what is diastole?
when the heart relaxes and refills with blood
what is systole?
period of contraction of the ventricles of the heart that occurs between the first and second heart sounds of the cardiac cycle
what is hypertension
high blood pressure
what is hypotension
low blood pressure
what is the units of blood pressure
mmHg
where should the arm be held when taking blood pressure?
heart level
where do you place stethoscope when measuring blood pressure?
cubital fossa of the arm
what artery is located on the cubital fossa of the arm
brachial artery
state the stages of blood pressure measurement - 4
- wrap BP cuff tightly around arm of participant
- place stethoscope on cubital fossa of arm
- inflate BP cuff to approx 180 mmHg then deflate slowly
- listen for Korotkoff sounds
5.deflate BP cuff and remove from ppt
why do we hear Korotkoff sounds?
due to turbulent blood flow
what is the first soft tapping Korotkoff sound in BP measurement?
systolic blood pressure
