Q

Hypertension & Health

Physical

A
  • Results from an increased in TPR
    • Heart works harder to push blood to periphery, yet there is no increase in cardiac output
  • Promotes ventricular hypertrophy
    • Decrease in elasticity and force production results in less blood flowing to periphery
  • Untreated hypertension may cause premature death

Q

How does exercise lower blood pressure?

A
  • Decrease in TPR
    • Increase blood vessel diameter
    • Angiogenesis
    • Increased elimination of sodium
  • Promote decrease in cardiac ouput
    • High insulin activates SNS. Exercise leads to lower insulin levels and greater insulin sensitivity
    • Decrease in sympathetic nerve activity lowers resting HR
