Blood Pressure Flashcards
What are the different units of pressure?
- milligrams of mercury (mmHg)
- pound per square inch (psi)
- pascal (Pa)
Blood pressure is measured in?
mmHg (above the surrounding air pressure)
Central venous pressure measured in?
cmH2O
Blood pressure is expressed in terms of?
- systolic - pressure your blood exerts against your artery walls when the heart beats
- diastolic - pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest
Blood cannot be?
Compressed
Where is blood pressure usually measured from and using what?
The brachial artery, using a sphygmomanometer
What is the first korotkoff sound a measure of?
Systolic blood pressure - blood flow is turbulent as it starts to flow through the restricted area again and makes a pounding sound
What is the last sound a measure of?
Diastolic blood pressure - laminar flow has returned therefore no sound
What is the normal blood pressure range?
- systolic ( 90-140 mmHg )
- diastolic ( 70-90 mmHg )
What is hypertension?
High blood pressure
What is hypotension?
Low blood pressure
What affects changes in blood pressure?
- blood vessel diameter
- cardiac output (blood flow)
- viscosity of blood
Properties of liquids under pressure are important for body function?
- movement of blood and lymph
- fluid movement across membranes
- bladder function
What is pascals principle?
Any change in pressure in an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally to every part of the fluid
Pressure is dependant on?
- the depth of the liquid and the density of the liquid
