Explain what we mean by Fitness?
A measure of how well you can perform physical tasks
E.g. Strength speed agility flexibility & stamina
Explain blood circulation
The blood leaves the heart under high pressure in arteries.
This splits into thousands of capillaries.
Under low pressure it goes back to the heart through the veins.
Systolic and diastolic pressure - explain…
Heart contracts creating high blood pressure = systolic pressure
Heart relaxes creating low blood pressure = diastolic pressure
What is blood pressure measured in?
mmHg - mm of mercury
Healthy blood pressure - this would be…?
135 over 85
Causes of high blood pressure?
Smoking, being over weight, alcohol, stress
Affects of high blood pressure?
Blood vessels can burst, lead to a stroke, brain damage, kidney damage
Affects of low blood pressure?
Poor circulation - tissues don’t get the food and oxygen , leading to feeling Dizzy & Fainting
How does smoking affect blood pressure?
Carbon monoxide mixes with haemoglobin in red blood cells so they can carry less oxygen. This means the heart beats faster = high blood pressure
Nicotine increases the heart rate = higher blood pressure too
