Blood Gases Flashcards
**External respiration is?
**on loading of oxygen and offloading of CO2 at pulmonary capillaries.
Describes bulk flow of air in and out of the lungs and the transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide into the bloodstream through diffusion.
Across respiratory membrane.
**Internal respiration is?
** Off loading of oxygen, on loading of CO2 at cellular capillaries
Oxygen diffuses out of the blood and into tissue
PaO2 of 60mmHg = what SaO2 ?
Sa02 of 90%
80 and 100 oxygen in your arteries
List factors affecting external respiration.
Decreased atmospheric oxygen Inadequate ventilation Upper airway obstruction Lower airway obstruction Inadequate diffusion (pe) Metabolism
What are factors that affect oxygen transportation?
Anemia
Poisoning
Shock - decreased Bp, Decreased RBC (hemorrhage)
**What are factors affecting internal respiration?
**
-CO poisoning
-Cellular environment is not conducive to off loading oxygen.
Decreased temp, increased pH, decreased pO2
Oximetry lights.
Oxygenated blood absorbs more infrared light
Deoxygenated blood absorbs more red light
Reveals arterial saturation by measuring difference.
Calibration accuracy decreases below 80%
Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation Curve
What causes a shift to Left? (Up)
Decreased PaO2
Decreased temp
Increased pH
Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation Curve
What causes a shift to Right? (Down)
Increased PaC02
Increased temp
