blood flow Flashcards
name the type of circulation in the circulatory system
- define it also-
double circulation
- blood travels through the heart twice during 1 circuit of the body
- (travels through the pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit simultaneously)
2 circuits in the system
-pulmonary circuit
-systemic circuit
what is the pulmonary circuit
blood travels from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs through the pulmonary artery
environment of the pulmonary circuit
- blood is carried under low pressure
- ideal as the blood moves slowly through the pulmonary capillaries
- ensuring maximum gas exchange - ideal as the blood has less distance to travel from the heart, so less pressure is needed/ required
environment of the systemic circuit
what type of pressure
benefits
why its nessesary
blood is pumped under high pressure
- ideal to ensure all **organs and tissues recieve sufficient metabolites **
- ensures waste is transported out of body quickly
high pressure allows blood to move faster down the aorta and reach the organs faster
the high pressure is nessesary as blood travels a further distance
how is the systemic circuit adapted for its function
arteries (aorta) has a thicker muscular wall of the left ventricle
what are metabolites
anything needed for respiration or growth
cronological order of blood flow in a double circulation
