blood cells Flashcards
name the types of blood cells
and what the second one contents
- erythrocytes
- leucocytes
- eosinophils
- neutrophils
- basophils
- lymphocytes
-monocytes
erythrocytes
function
-carry oxygen around body by having a large heamoglobin contents
- transports oxygen around body for aerobic respiration
erythrocytes adaptions to function
-
biconcave shape
-provides large surface area for easy diffusion -
small size
-the haemoglobin contents is close to the cell membrane and allows for easier diffusion -
no nucleus/ cell organelles
-theres more room for more haemoglobin to fit into so more oxygen can be carried around -
plicable membrane
-allows to fit through narrow lumens and capillaries - large surface area
leucocytes function
defensive role
- protection from diseases
- antibody production
- cell mediated immunity
leucocytes structure
- larger
- contain a nucleus
- varied shape
catagories of leucocytes
- polymorphs
- monocytes
- lymphocytes
simple difference between a monocyte and polymorph and lymphocyte in terms of life span and productions
- polymorphs are shortlived and kill pathogens by phagocytosis at the site of infection
-monocytes are long lived and stay at site of infection for a while then tracel to body tissue to kill pathogens by phagocytosis
- lymphocytes product antibodies for protection as an immune response
- **produce memory cells ** for long lasting antigen immunity
polymorph function
- kills pathogens at site of infection via phagocytosis
polymorph appearance
- small (microphages)
- varied in shape
- multilobed nucleus
- granular cytoplasm
monocyte appearance
- kidney-shaped nucleus
- large
- turn into phagocytic macrophages
lymphocyte appearance
- huge nucleus
- little cytoplasm
- ## takes up 25% of majority
two types of lymphocytes and their function
B CELLS - antibody production
T CELLS - cell mediated immunity (destroys damaged cells and foreign material)
process of monocytes becoming macrophages
- travel to body tissue
- embed in it
- becoming phagocytic macrophages
- destroy pathogens and foreign cells via phagocytosis
platelet thrombocytes
- irregular shaped membrane bound cell fragments
where are platelet thrombocytes formed
large bone marrow
