tourniquets
hypo allergenic tape/ bandage
biohazard container
sharps container

Steps for ETS Venipuncture
(After greeting patient and introduction)

A
  1. Sanitize hands
  2. Prepare needle and supplies
  3. Ask patient for permission to take blood
  4. Touch inner elbow for vein
  5. Tie arm with tourniquet
  6. Sanitize area
  7. Needle facing up, hold in 15 degree angle, insert through skin quickly but smoothly
  8. Place empty tube into the needle holder with thumb and non dominant hand to push tube inside.
  9. Remove tube and insert 2nd tube, repeating steps
  10. After removing last tube, remove tourniquet, place cotton ball over puncture site and remove needle at the same time. Safety the needle
  11. Ask patient to hold cotton ball, grab hypoallergenic pressure bandage around arm.
  12. Throw needle in sharps container, cotton balls and alcohol wipes in biohazard
  13. Label blood vials and place initials at the bottom.
  14. Record procedure, location/ route specimen in patient’s record.
