What you need prepared for ETS Venipuncture?
Vacuum tube needle
needle holder
proper tubes requested
alcohol pads/gauze pads
tourniquets
hypo allergenic tape/ bandage
biohazard container
sharps container
Steps for ETS Venipuncture
(After greeting patient and introduction)
- Sanitize hands
- Prepare needle and supplies
- Ask patient for permission to take blood
- Touch inner elbow for vein
- Tie arm with tourniquet
- Sanitize area
- Needle facing up, hold in 15 degree angle, insert through skin quickly but smoothly
- Place empty tube into the needle holder with thumb and non dominant hand to push tube inside.
- Remove tube and insert 2nd tube, repeating steps
- After removing last tube, remove tourniquet, place cotton ball over puncture site and remove needle at the same time. Safety the needle
- Ask patient to hold cotton ball, grab hypoallergenic pressure bandage around arm.
- Throw needle in sharps container, cotton balls and alcohol wipes in biohazard
- Label blood vials and place initials at the bottom.
- Record procedure, location/ route specimen in patient’s record.
