Blood Clotting aka "Hemostasis" Flashcards
Hemostasis :
the process that controls bleeding at the site of injury, aka “blood clotting”
Blood loss is stopped by formation of…
… blood clots that seal the breaks in blood vessels
Steps of Hemostasis :
-step 1…
Step 1) Vascular Spasm :
damage to the blood vessel wall it stimulates the smooth muscle wall to constrict
~why constriction? its going to limit the amount of blood going through
Steps of Hemostasis
-step 2…
Step 2) Platelet plug : happens within 30-60 seconds
platelets stick to the exposed collagen (CT) from the damaged blood vessel wall, platelets stick to the collagen
—– which release prothrombin activator > prothrombin [produced in the liver + requires vita K] into THROMBIN [molecular scissors that cut protein] > fibrinogen (protein getting cut) > into FIBRIN fibers
Steps of Hemostasis
-step 3…
Step 3) Coagulation :
blood vessel wall is no longer bleeding because of the FIBRIN fibers = which REINFORCE the clot
What are platelets?
Fragments of cells called megakarocytes produced in the bone marrow
