Blood and lymphatic system Flashcards
what does the cardiovascular system do
transports substances to and from body cells
what does blood do
carry everything
what does the heart do
pumps the blood
what are blood vessels
the network of tubes that the blood travels through
blood has 3 vital roles, what are they
transports oxygen, nutrients and waste
regulates body temp
Protects the body from disease
What type of tissue is blood
a connective tissue
What cells is blood made up of
red blood cells
white blood cells
platelets
what is plasma
a sticky fluid composed mostly of water
Red blood cells are what % of all blood cells
90%
What is red blood cells role
transport oxygen to cells
what is white blood cells role
Defend the body and fight disease
what is platelets role
forming blood clots to prevent bleeding
blood clotting is a 3 step process
what are these steps
vascular spasm
platelet plug formation
coagulation
what is vascular spasm
constriction of the blood vessel occurs to reduce blood flow through the damaged area
what is platelet plug formation
platelets are activated and begin to stick to the damaged site and to each other to from a temporary plug
what is coagulation
it is the final phase of blood clotting and involves the activation of many clotting factors.
What is deep vein thrombosis
a blood clot in the deep veins usually on the leg
What does the lymphatic system do
keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body from infections
what is odema (swelling)
a accumulation of fluid within connective tissues
What are the 4 lymph organs
tonsils
spleen
thymus
peyers patches
what do tonsils do
protect against pathogens that could gain access to the body through the mouth
what does a spleen do
stores and filters blood and fights infection
