Blood Flashcards
1
Q
Blood plasma
A
-Yellow liquid
Transports dissolved substances in the blood e.g. Waste co2, products of digestion, hormones.
2
Q
Platelets
A
- Small fragments of cell with no nucleus.
- Helps form blood clots.
- Along with the fribrinogen to fibrin reaction help to seal wounds.
- All its reactions are controlled by enzymes.
3
Q
Red blood cells
A
- Biconcave discs with no nucleus, hollow to store oxygen, small to provide large surface area to volume ratio.
- Contains the protein haemoglobin.
- Haemoglobin binds with oxygen, and is carried round the body in the form of oxyhemoglobin.
4
Q
White blood cells
A
- No set shape, fewer and bigger than red blood cells.
- Has a nucleus.
- Fights pathogens, as phagocytes (engulf), and lymphocytes (antibodies trap).
5
Q
Arteries
A
- Transports blood away from the heart, as it’s under a lot of pressure.
- Aorta transports oxygenated blood to the body.
- Pulmonary artery transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
- Has no valves.
6
Q
Veins
A
- Transports blood around the body to the heart.
- Under less pressure than arteries.
- Has valves to keep direction of flow set.
- Vena carvae carries deoxygenated from body to heart
- Pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from the lungs.
7
Q
Capillaries
A
- One cell thick to allow diffusion and other movements to take place.
- Very low pressure
- Where gas exchange takes place.
- No valves
8
Q
Coronary arteries/veins
A
- The heart receives its own supply of blood from the coronary arteries.
- There are two main coronary arteries branching from the aorta.
- They supply oxygen rich blood to the heart muscle.
