Blood Flashcards
What are the 3 kinds of plasma proteins in the blood? And what are their functions?
- Albumin- osmotic pressure
- Globulins- create antibodies
- Fibrinogens- generate FIBRIN for blood clotting
What is the pH of Blood?
7.4 +_ 0.05
What is a Hemoglobin made of?
4 polypeptide chains
- 2 Alpha
- 2 Beta
What are the 3 types of hemoglobin?
- Oxyhemoglobin- O2 in lungs
- Deoxyhemoglobin- O2 in tissues
- Carbaminohemoglobin- CO2 loading in tissues
What is the life cycle of a Red Blood Cell
- Lifespan of 120 days
-Erythropoiesis is the creation of RBC’s
-^Stimulated by HYPOXIA…
-Causes:
- too little RBC’s
- reduced oxygen
- insufficient hemoglobin - Kidneys then release ERYTHROPOIETIN (EPO)
- EPO stimulates the RED BONE MARROW,
- Red Blood Cells INCREASE
- Oxygen carrying capacity of blood INCREASE
How is a Red Blood Cells destructed?
- Heme turns into Bilirubin (secreted by the liver)
- Bilirubin turn into a pigment called UROBILINOGEN
- UROBILINOGEN EXITS from urine OR in feces as STERCOBILIN (a brown pigment)
What happens when you give someone the wrong type of blood?
Agglutination
What is Anemia and what causes it?
When the blood has a low oxygen capacity
Causes:
1. Blood loss
2. Low RBC production
3. High RBC production
What are the 6 types of Leukocytes?
- Neutrophils
- Lymphocytes
- Monocytes
- Eosinophils
- Basophils
Which types of Leukocytes are GRANULOCYTES?
Basophils
Eosinophils
Neutrophils
Which types of leukocytes are AGRANULOCYTES?
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
What is the function of a Neutrophil?
Phagocytize bacteria
What is the function of a lymphocyte?
Makes B and T cells
What is the function of a monocyte?
turns into macrophages
What is the function of eosinophils?
Fight parasitic worms
What is the function of basophils?
Releases histamine which causes inflammation
What is the function of a platelet?
- Forms a PLATELET PLUG that helps seal in blood vessels
- Regulated by THROMBOPOIETIN
- Is followed by COAGULATION
What is HEMOSTASIS? And what are the steps?
- the stoppage of bleeding when collagen is exposed
1. Coagulation
2. Fibrinogen is made by the LIVER which circulates in the blood and is converted by THROMBIN into FIBRIN
Besides the 5 formed elements in the blood what are the rest?
Erythrocytes- transports oxygen and carbon dioxide
Leukocytes- diapedesis
Platelets- blood clotting, seals holes
What is Diapedesis?
When leukocytes squeeze through gaps between cells
When a cell is annucleate what does that mean?
- It cannot reproduce
- It cannot repair damage
- It lacks a nucleus and organelles
What is polycythemia and what causes it?
- Too many Red Blood Cells
- Caused by…
-high altitudes
-bone marrow cancer
