Blood Flashcards
What is blood?
Blood is tissue consisting of cells, suspended in fluid
What are the two main functions of blood?
Transport of gases, nutrients, hormones, antibodies and heat.
Defence against disease
What is the role of red blood cells
To carry oxygen around the body
What are the features of a red blood cell?
It has a biconcave shape which increases the surface area to absorb oxygen.
It contains haemoglobin which bonds with oxygen to form Oxyhaemoglobin. it has no nucleus, which means there’s more room for haemoglobin.
What is the role of a white blood cell?
To protect from disease
What is the role of platelets?
help our blood clot, stops further blood loss, forms a scab to prevent entry of microbes
What does plasma contain?
Dissolved substances
What is the equation for a
Cardiac output?
Cardiac output= stroke volume x heart rate
Why does heart rate increase during exercise?
Heart rate immediately increases so that cardiac output increases -> more blood is pumped -> more oxygen and more glucose are delivered to the muscle cells in the body -> use these to respire more -> release more energy -> contract more. More oxygen also means that anaerobic respiration could be avoided for longer and avoid muscle fatigue
What a the rule of platelets?
To help our blood clot
