Blood Flashcards
What is plasma
- Blood is a complex liquid (plasma) in which the cells are suspended
- more then 90% water
- many inorganic and organic substances dissolve in plasma
What are Erythrocytes and their percentage in blood
Red blood cells (45%)
What are leukocytes and their percentage in blood
white blood cells ( less then 1%)
What are thrombocytes and their percentage in blood
Platelets (less than 1%)
What is haemopoiesis
the formation of bloods cellular components from haematopoietic stem cells
What are the function of erythrocytes
- transport oxygen
- flat disk shape with indent in middle like a doughnut with no hole
-shape provides large surface area for the diffusion of oxygen across the membrane - contain haemoglobin to transport oxygen ( can pick up 4 O2 molecules )
- red when oxygenated ( gives blood colour )
- no nucleus, organelles, mitochondria or ribosome s
What are antigens
- antigens on erythrocytes are structured capable of inducing an immune response
- blood group antigens determine which blood group you possess
- recognise and bind into specific antigens
What is the function of thrombocytes
- thrombocytes (or platelets) are small cell fragments, their main function is the formation of mechanical plugs during the response to vascular injuries
- no nuclei but have mitochondria
What is the function of leucocytes
leucocytes (or white blood cells) are responsible for
- immune responses against infection: viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens
- identify and destroy cancer cells
- remove dead, injured or dying cells and debris (have nucleus)
