blood Flashcards
what is valves
veins have valves to prevent blood to flow in the wrong direction
name the 6 functions of blood
oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, waste nutrients and minerals
function of oxygen
to transports from the lungs to the heart and then to the bodies tissue for energy
-go into the body for energy
function of carbon dioxide
it is to be transported from the tissues to the heart and then to the lungs to be expired.
function of hormones
to transport materials (such as hormones) from one organ to another
Nutrients and minerals
the blood is to transport nutrients mainly glucose and minerals from the intestines to the tissues
where is waste transported to
blood transports waste products to the kidneys
what are red blood cells
they are a disc-shaped blood that is made in bone marrow and contains a red coloured compound protein called haemoglobin which transports oxygen to the tissues
what is the most common blood cell
red blood cells
what are red blood cells also called
erythrocytes
what does haemoglobin form when bonds with oxygen
it makes oxyhaemoglobin
what is another name for white blood cells
leucocytes
what are white blood cells
they are bigger then red blood cells and have a large nuclei.
It is the bodies defence system.
(some surround and consume harmful microbes and some produce chemicals called antibodies that fight infections )
what are platelets
they produce thrombokinase -(a chemical needed for blood clotting.) they help repair tissues and close wounds both in and externally
(when needed they grow into irregular shapes and sticks together to form a plug over the wound)
what is plasma
it makes up 55% of blood volume and can be separated from the other components of blood using a centrifuge
