Block 5 Flashcards
What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere?
Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Stratosphere, Tropopause, Troposphere
What layer does 90% of the weather occur?
Troposphere
Describe a low pressure system
Cyclonic flow (counterclockwise), upward motion of air.
Describe a high pressure system
Anticyclonic(clockwise), downward motion
What is Dewpoint
The temperature at which air reaches a state where it can hold no more water.
What is a sea breeze?
When cooler air moves into land (high pressure into low pressure)
What is a land breeze?
When a high pressure system moves outward towards the ocean (low pressure)
What is Radiation Fog?
Forms in low lying areas on calm, clear nights. As the ground cools at night the air temp at the surface cools to the dew point.
What is advection fog?
Forms as result of warm moist air condensing as it moves over a cooler surface.
What is upslope fog?
Result from warm moist air being cooled as it is forced up slopped terrain.
- most common in mountain ranges.
What is Steam fog?
Occurs when cold, dry air passes from land to warmer bodies of water.
- low level turbulence can occur.
- icing could become hazardous.
What is a cold front?
Cold air moving to displace warmer air.
- could contain servers thunderstorms.
What is a warm front?
Warm air moving to displace colder air.
- make for inclement weather over a wider area and can contain embedded thunderstorms.
How do you recognize passage? (3) (TWA)
Temperature change, wind direction change, air pressure change.
What is mechanical turbulence?
Obstacles that disturb smooth air flow (trees or buildings)
Convective Turbulence
Turbulence caused typically by surface heating
Frontal turbulence
Lift in of warm air by sloping frontal surface of a cold air mass
