Block 3 Flashcards
What are the Four Cycles of an Engine?
Intake, Compression, Combustion, Exhaust
Wet Sump vs. Dry Sump
What does the Piper Archer Have?
-Wet Sump- Gravity fed, stored in oil pan
-Dry Sump- Pump fed, stored in external reservoir
- Archer has a Wet Sump
What are Magnetos and How many does the Archer have?
-Generates electricity for spark plugs (distributes at prop line)
- 2 Magnetos
What are Spark Plugs and How Many Does the Archer Have?
-Ignite the Air/ Fuel Mixture Inside an Engine
- Archer Has 8 (4 Per magneto)
Why and When Would You Lean Mixture?
-Why: Fuel Ratio Must Remain at 14:7:1 Ratio
-When: Operating at Altitudes higher than 3,000 msl
What Does the Fuel Injection System Do?
Advantages and Disadvantages
-Spray fuel directly into intake manifold at cylinders
- Advan.: Better Cold starts, Improved performance, More efficient fuel dis.
-Disadvan.: Vapor locks, plugged injectors
What is Vapor Lock?
Difficulty Starting the engine when hot
What is Carburetor Ice? Solution?
- When Air passes through the carburetor (Bernoulli Priciple) and the air naturally freezes to the sides.
- Solution: Carburetor Heat
Signs of Carburetor Icing (3)
- Reduction in RPM
- Engine Roughness
- Fuel Starvation
Purpose of Oil (5) LCCSA
- Lubrication
- Cooling
- Cleaning
- Sealing
- Actuating
What Kind of Engine Does the Piper Archer Have?
What does IO-360 stand for?
- Lycoming 4-cylinder IO-360
- Fuel injected Air cooled
What are the Different Types of Props? (4) (FACC)
- Fixed Pitch (UND climb & cruise combo)
- Adjustable: changed on the ground
- Controllable: changed in flight
- Constant Speed: changes based on RPM
What is Blade Twist?
Compensates for the outer part of the blade travels a greater distance than the inside does.
Fuel Colors and Grade
- Red- 80
- Green- 100/130
- Blue- 100LL
- Clear- Jet Fuel
What does the Fuel Selector Do?
Allows to change fuel tanks for operation uses.
