Block 13- Week 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Paclitaxal

A

Micro tubule stabilisation agent

Taxoid antineoplastic agent - first line for advanced ovarian carcinoma and breast cancer

Binds to B subunit of Tubulin causing hyper stabilisation of micro tubule reorganising micro tubule cytoskeleton

Also induces apoptosis in cancer cells by binding to bcl-2 blocking anti apoptotic function of Bcl-2 and thus allowing apoptosis to proceed

Q

Cisplatin

A

Anti neoplastic alkylating agent

Cancer

Cell cycle non specific

Attach alkyl groups to DNA bases resulting in DNA fragmentation and preventing DNA synthesis

Q

Isoniazid

A

Highly specific bactericidal agent which targets mycobacterium - M. Tuberculosis , M.bovis etc

Prodrug activated by bacterial catalase , once activated inhibits synthesis of mycoloic acids - essential component of bacterial cell wall

Q

Ethambutol

A

Bactericidal agent

Oral chemotherapeutic agent against mycobacterium incl M. Tuberculosis

Inhibits arabinosyl transferase which is involved in cell wall biosynthesis - inhibiting cell wall complex production leading to an increase in cell wall permeability

Q

Pyrazinamide

A

Treat TB

Active only against M . Tuberculosis

Gets activated to pyrazinoic acid in the bacilli

Interferes with fatty Acid synthase reducing new fatty acid synthesis required for growth and replication

Ciprofloxacin

A

Broad spectrum antibiotic

Is a quinolone

Inhibition of topoisomerase II and topoisomerase IV which are required for bacterial DNA replication , transcription , repair etc
