5
Q

how does desogestrel work?

A

it binds to progesterone and oestrogen receptors slowing the frequency of GnRH from the hypothalamus and reducing the LH surge and maintaining high levels of progesterone

10
Q

what’s the moa of ethinylestradiol?

A

it interacts with oestrogen receptor which regulates gene transcription. this leads to an increase in hepatic synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin, thyroid binding globulin and other serum proteins. it also suppresses FSH release. during menstruation it causes maturation/release of the egg and thickens the uterus lining to allow for implantation

15
Q

what is dinoprostone used for?

A

vaginal suppository to induce cervical ripening and labour

16
Q

how does flucloxacillin work?

A

it inhibits penicillin-binding-protein in the cel wall which prevents the last stage bacterial cell wall synthesis. cell lysis can then occur

17
Q

what type of drug us tetracycline?

A

30s inhibitor

18
Q

what is tetracyclines moa?

A

it binds to the bacterial 30s subunit and blocks incoming tRNA from binding to the ribosome receptor site. this inhibits translation and therefore bacterial growth

19
Q

what do we tend to prescribe these days instead of tetracycline?

A

doxycycline

20
Q

what type of drug is gentamicin?

A

a 30S/50S inhibitor amino glycoside

21
Q

what types of gram negative bacterial-causing infections is gentamicin indicated for?

A

pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, enterobacter

22
Q

what’s the downside of aminoglycosides?

A

can cause significant ear and kidney damage

23
Q

what type of drug is sodium valproate?

A

an anti-convulsant

24
Q

how does sodium valproate work?

A

its a GABA receptor agonist

25
Q

what are the indications for sodium valproate?

A

epilepsy and is used as a mood stabiliser

26
Q

what is a major contraindication of sodium valproate?

A

pregnancy

27
Q

what type of drug Is thalidomide?

A

an immunomodulatory agent

28
Q

what’s a major contraindication of thalidomide?

A

pregnancy

29
Q

what’s the purpose of 5 alpha reductase?

A

to reduce testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone which can then bind to the androgen receptor but with a greater affinity than testosterone

30
Q

what is somatropin?

A

a synthetic human growth hormone receptor agonist

31
Q

what is somatropin used to treat?

A

dwarfism and growth failure
