Black Feminism Flashcards
Abbott et al
Feminism is concentrated on womens experiences derived from white perspectives and priorities (ethnocentric). White feminists are allowed to speak on behalf of black women but black feminists are not allowed to speak on behalf of white women
Brewer
Triple systems theory-class, race and gender combine to create multiple sources of inequality, black women suffer disadvantage because they are black, they are women and they are working class. Each of these inequalities reinforces and multiplies the other inequalities.
Mirza
supports brewer by arguing that there is a need for distinct black feminism. Doesn’t claim that black women have unique insight into what’s true or not but beloved this group makes an important contribution to the development of feminism as they can challenge assumptions by drawing on their own experience. They challenge stereotypes that black women are passive victims and eager wives or daughters but instead are brave proud and strong
Connell
gender inequalities are caused by colonialism in developing countries, this is because gender inequalities in colonial times are rooted in current attitudes towards race. It would be wrong to base theories of gender on experiences of women in a minority such as women in the uk. It is important to develop feminist perspectives that challenge western feminism as the majority of inequality is found in the southern continents
Yuval Davies
Other feminist approaches are ethnocentric
